The Jabiru is an Australian type certified production composite aircraft used by flying schools, bush pilots and recreational flyers throughout Australia. It has proved itself to be strong and reliable operating in harsh conditions. Careful use of modern composite techniques has resulted in a strong, sleek and curvaceous structure that is clean and light. The aircraft is designed around the pilot and passenger, being spacious and comfortable for touring. All controls fall easily to hand and include a centrally mounted control column, brake and trim lever. Jabiru have designed and certified their own aero engine for use in other aircraft types as well as the Jabiru. Being aircraft designers, they appreciate their own requirements of a power plant which has led them to design a new generation of aircraft engine. The Jabiru engine has a high power to weight ratio, is air cooled, direct drive, quiet (62db), compact, horizontally opposed, simple installation and economical at 14 litres per hour. The success of the production Jabiru, prompted requests for a homebuilt kit version from around the world. Production and kit aircraft components are built alongside each other, there is no discrimination between them making the Jabiru kit unique as it is manufactured under stringent CAA Quality Procedures and Inspections. THE KIT The Jabiru comes complete with everything except paint, upholstery and radio it includes VFR instruments (IFR option package is available), upholstery patterns and even a battery purchase order for your local Century/Yuasa distributor. The kit build time is typically 600 hours from start to finish. Everything has been thought of right down to resin mixing cups, mixing sticks, applicators and brushes. FINISH Many composite kit manufacturers supply components "green" requiring substantial finishing and pinhole filing. The Jabiru components all come in white gelcoat finish thus reducing completion times and frustration. FUSELAGE The fuselage is provided in two halves (top and bottom); with the most significant task being the joining of these items and the bonding of the empennage. Most of the home builders work involves fitting out the aircraft with components and hardware supplied. All locating points are identified by factory drilled holes. WINGS The wings are supplied complete except for the fitment of flap and aileron attachments. They are also gelcoated. UNDERCARRIAGE Two alternative undercarriage systems will be offered, the standard 400 x 4 wheels with spats (included in the kit); or the new 600 x 6 Bigfoot system. Jabirus new nosewheel assembly is proving to be very successful in all applications despite the best efforts of some flying schools to break it! Jabiru have not had a single nosewheel problem since the introduction of the heavy duty unit twelve months ago. MANUAL A very detailed constructors manual, developed from Jabirus own factory Quality Assurance Manual, sets out the step-by-step procedures, checklists, engineering drawings and include more than 100 full colour photographs. The checklists even advise the approximate time for each activity and what assistance you might need for particular tasks (e.g. two people required or have someone around to "hold this").
